Nicely put Andrew (no we haven't met yet, my name's Chris and I am a
Brit living in The Netherlands working at a NATO HQ).
I have just done 4 months duty (TDY) at Incirlik AB in Turkey and the guns/NRA/licences discussion was almost never-ending. But it was risky (socially) to offer an opinion in case you were talking the man who had 2 cases of various sorts of handgun under his bed. On topic: the scope for carrying an OM around in Turkey is huge with all the wonderful ancient ruins around. The locals were also pretty keen to be photographed. Andrew >> Andrew, you deserve a less flippant answer than my last one.Point taken - and a much more reasonable response than what happened on another list. I can understand the fascination with guns - it's like the fascination with cameras (machines as art) and I always seem to bite on this issue. It's just that we here in Aus. have a very similar society to yours and we mostly manage without them. You live in fear of violence and choose to protect yourself with a form of violence as have many of your compatriots. Consequently, you seem to have created a violent, dangerous and fearful culture. I'm not a pacifist, although I will admit to being a pinko greenie tree-hugger, and I have used a firearm for hunting and target, but I can see no place for a handgun in a home or in the pocket of a civilian in my society. I recommend it.
