if you believe in gun control, then you should back
up your convictions by putting the following sign in your yard:
THIS HOME IS A GUN-FREE ZONE
But I have a B-B pistol that I use for scaring squirrels off my bird
feeders. (Being a quiche-eater, I'm careful not to hurt them. I just
want them to associate stinging pain with my feeders.)
So do I still qualify? If so, where can I get one? And what happens
if they discover I have a B-B pistol?
...a right to keep and bear arms recognized (*not* granted; the Bill
of Rights does not grant rights, it recognizes rights that aleady exist, and
that no government can legitimately infringe)...
How about a sign that says, "This head is a brain-free zone?"
There may be a good reason to have a gun, but it seems pretty silly
to claim it is some intrinsic right "that no government can
legitimately infringe." I don't even think a literal interpretation
of The Bible would go that far, although such a reading has been
interpreted to allow you own slaves.
It's pretty easy to adopt absolutist attitudes; it's much more
difficult to figure out real-world solutions to problems like
personal security that don't infringe on the rights of others.
