Good point, John. Since the Vivitar in question was brand new the
capacitors probably were nowhere near fully charged. That usually takes up
to half a dozen full pops with adequate recharging time between. Same for
any flash that hasn't been used for a while.

Are you waiting well beyond the charge light coming on to fire the flashes?
Often, flashes are only 75% ready when the charge light comes on.
