My original comment was maybe not as expressive in describing the BG2
(or Sunpak 5xx) sound where the whine is a warbling sound. The switching of
the invertor on and off causes the more intermittent warbling nature of the
BG2 sound versus say the T20 or T32 which just rises in frequency as the
capacitors charge. Almost all small on camera flashes actually use a
"Blocking oscillator" rather than what some might more narrowly term a
chopper circuit with a fixed frequency oscillator. Although both types of
circuits do "chop" the low voltage applied to the transformer. Even the Large
Sunpak 5xx,Metz 45 etc use blocking oscillators.
