On the OM-2SP, just like the OM-3's and OM-4's there is no on/off switch. The
meter is always "on" (not the display, though - this shuts itself off after
about 90 seconds). To turn on the display, lightly depress the shutter
release, or, as you discovered, move the mode switch. IIRC pressing the LCD
illumination button (on the side of the lens mount) will also turn the
display on, but I don't have my OM-2S with me. Usually I just use the shutter
release to turn it on. This constant on operation results in the OM-2S's (and
OM-4's) somewhat undeserved reputation as battery hogs. One little trick is
to set the shutter speed ring to mechanical 1/60 or B. This prevents the
display from being accidentally activated in the event there is some
accidental pressure on the shutter release. It doesn't stop the steady drain,
though.
