Fine assessment. You may also be using too high a compression ratio in
your .gif files.
I scan stuff for the WWW at an initial 1200 dpi. I loose nothing
detectable in the final 72 dpi image over that of a 2400 dpi initial
scan and the image manipulation goes MUCH faster.
