You are quite correct, I forgot about that, even though I have one!
However, I had an idea and it seems to work. You can slip the hood over
a 55-49 step down ring and tighten it so it is mounted on the ring, you
can then screw it onto a 49mm thread lens. I am not sure about clearances
with the 85/2 as with this method the step down ring is 6-8mm inside the
rear opening of the hood so when it is mounted on a lens a bit of the hood
projects back past the front of the lens.
I tried this on my 50mm f1.2 and was able to mount the hood with no
problems. There was still 1 or 2mm clearance from the aperture ring to
the back of the hood.
It vigneted a bit with the 50mm, as you would expect, but I think it would
be fine for the 85mm.
