Short story: there is a lens hood for the 40/2 and it at least used to be the
same one as for the 85/2 and 100/2.8. Current list I have shows 85/2 hood as
108-240. No hood listed for 100/2.8.
Long story:
I held on to the note below for the longest time, because whenever I looked at
it I found myself saying "duh!" -as in "I should have realized that". That's
regarding the 40/2 - on the subject of the 24 shift I was even more embarrassed.
That is until just today. I've been gathering Olympus lens hoods for awhile
now, and only just starting to use them a little - largely because several in
this group think it's such a good idea. If it's good for others, maybe I should
try it right? Well anyway, when I find an Olympus lens hood I chuck it into the
case/lens pouch/box/ziplock bag with the lens (when I can find the lens...but
that's a different story). Somewhere along the way the 40/2 acquired a lens
hood. And in fact I've got two of them because I also have one with my 85/2.
As well as a hood with my 100/2.8 which is identical in shape to the others.
Get to the point you say? "Olympus 2/40mm 2/85mm 2,8/100mm Japan" - rubber 49mm
thread. The hood on my 100/2.8 says "Olympus 2/85mm 2,8/100mm Japan" but is
otherwise identical. I also (now) vaguely remember that in a discussion of the
40/2 (before I ever owned such a thing) there was a comment that you couldn't
(effectively) use a slip on lens hood because you'd be covering the aperture
ring (which on this lens is frontmost). I didn't remember this when Keith
originally replied, probably because I was too busy feeling embarrassed about
being so idiotic.
p.s. anybody got a spare case for the 40/2?

Isn't the one for the 35/2.8 or 50/1.8 (#108-230) suitable for the 40/2?
