Yes, I've seen little plastic "caps" to use for when the shoe isn't mounted.
Looked not unlike the plastic cap which goes in the non-writing end of a Bic
pen (or "Biro"). Don't have any, unfortunately. There were also plastic
"inserts" (for lack of a better term) to put in the shoe itself to cover the
terminals for when a flash wasn't mounted. I do still have one of those
around somewhere.
