Try any of the following:
1. Very fine steel wool (grade 0000);
2. Fine or very fine sandpaper (the kind used for polishing, rather than stock
removal);
3. Methanol (if it's encrusted) or 99 0sopropanol ("rubbing alcohol").
WARNING: Do *NOT* use 70 0sopropanol (also sometimes sold as "rubbing
alcohol") as a substitute -- it's 30% water, and probably not a good thing to
get in your Winder.
You might want to go at it with methanol or iso first to remove everything
that's loose, then use very fine steel wool or other fine abrasive. After
that, re-tinning the contacts might be just the thing to do. As an alternative
abrasive which is very gentle, try using synthetic or rubber erasers (the kind
that are used to erase pencil marks). Sometimes these are enough. Various
other options exist, but they involve abrasive or polishing pastes, and you
might be working in cramped conditions and won't want to get the paste
somewhere you can't easily clean it from.
Good luck. I know what a pain it can be when your Winder's sick. :-/
