: I'm waiting on my F280 manual to arrive from Olympus, but in the
: meantime, maybe someone can tell me the difference between a synced
: F280 flash at, say, 1/250 and my 3rd party (Kalimar) 1/16 fill flash
: at the same speed? Presumably, since there's enough light for the
: camera to be shooting at 1/250, both flashes are fulfilling the same
: function, right?
Not exactly. Non-FP flashes used for fill-ins have the handicap that the
shutter stays open for 1/60 sec, allowing ghost images, whilst the flash
fires with durations between 1/1000 and 1/40.000 sec, freezing all
movements.
An FP flash allows you to completely freeze movement, without producing
ghost images, by selecting shorter shutter speeds or emphasize movement by
selecting longer shutter speeds, just like available light exposures.
Shutter speeds of 1/125 or 1/60 are already long enough to emphasize many
movements, for longer shutter speeds the 4Ti has to be set to manual mode
and no longer uses OTF.
:On another note, I've gotten so comfortable with my tilting flash
:head that the F280's fixed angle head is a decided handicap. I wish
:Olympus had designed their flash with a tilt head.
And higher flash output. And support for Normal Auto. And an FP
multiconnector. And faster recycling times. And a switch to control ambient
light/flash ratio. And an OM-5AF that supported this flash. With a digital
back as an option. And...
"Neem je een foto, neem je Olympus" - Dutch advertising slogan for Olympus
(boy, what a cheap one!)
