<<This brings up an interesting question: How do you focus on the
"non-matte" side of the screen? In more than 25 years of using
my OM-1, I've never realized which side of the screen I've been
focusing on. When things look like they are in focus, the picture
will (usually) turn out in focus as well -- but I didn't realize
that there are two points of focus: the matte side and the non-matte
side of the focusing screen. So how to you experts do it? I am
just a "young whippersnapper" in comparison to others on this list.

Hi Dan and all,

Look at it this way, if the screen is in properly and all is aligned
properly
you have one plane of focus, the matte part of the screen.
Now use the diopter adjustment like a grain focuser for enlarging.
Get the best grain image and you are in.
I use this method with the Varimaggot finder (good for photographing
various maggots) and I get a different setting. Must be that much more
precise.
