Let me add my take on this subject......
By placing the point of fixation a distance from the center of gravity
(balance point), you increase the 'polar moment of inertia' of the
lens/camera combination.
When you increase the polar moment of inertia, you will lower the resonant
frequency of the lens/camera system on the tripod mount, and hopefully
reduce the transmission of the higher frequency vibrations of a
mirror/shutter/aperture firing to image degrading lens movement.
