I think there was a discussion some time ago about the relative dynamic ranges
of
the various film types. I had thought that colour positive (slide) film had a
greater dynamic range than colour negative (print) film but it was pointed out
that
this was not the case.
Colour negative film has the greater dynamic range. This is not true of
the paper it is printed on,however, so there is a loss of dynamic range when
images
are printed.
I found this intriguing because if the technology were up to it you might be
able to
get better results by scanning colour negatives rather than colour positives.
Perhaps this is what NG did.
