I've only used the 3.5-4.5 but remember both it and the 35-70/4 are 'S'
series 'consumer' Zuikos - the 3.6 is 'the real thing'.

Interestingly enough, the f/4 model scored well in Gary's recent lens tests.
Does this mean Frank's 35-70/4 was a poor example? After reading the tests,
I couldn't see that there would be a significant gain in optical performance
in the f/3.6 but here is evidence to the contrary. Any more opinion
(preferably from a direct comparison)?
