The problem is that we are assuming that the first "calendar year" was 0001
instead of 0000. Now come on.  How many of us have cameras and lenses with
serial numbers below 100000?  I didn't think so.  I submit that the first
year wasn't 0000 or 0001 but actually 1027.  1000 was for "marketing
reasons" and the first 26 were actually prototypes and media samples.
