I'm not sure of the exact cause, but I've seen many cases of LCD which start to
lose elements, or simply fade altogether. I suspect it has something to do with
the "liquid" part of LCD, and possible shock, vibration, or heat? ie: My
Jetta's LCD clock is still fine, but the one in my '88 Westfalia has faded so
it is no longer readable.
