BTW, Philly International has had the bomb sniffer for some
time now. I find it _really_ useful, as my son has asthma and
must carry a battery-powered nebulizer (a rather bulky piece of
medical equipment) and a fair supply of medication whenever he
travels. "Scrutiny by swab" certainly speeds up the security check
in our case. We recently had an interesting time explaining to the
kind folks in Toronto what a nebulizer does :-(
As for looking through lenses...the security personnel in Heathrow
have been removing lenses from camera bodies and opening camera
backs at least as far back as 1983.
Then there was Kuwait airport (pre-war), where the boomboxes (and
there were many, as it seemed as if that was the one item every
returning Egyptian just _had_ to take home) were routinely
disassembled by security personnel at the gate. Camera-toting
Americans were just waved right on through...
