AA batteries may be close to 1.5V when new but have a steeper discharge curve, at least compared to silver oxide batteries. This means that the battery voltage drops further through the life of the battery, certainly more so than silver oxide. A silver oxide battery will keep much closer to 1.5V until it dies.
