I own one Manfrotto, two exaheads, three exaplates, and another Manfrotto
head (not hexa). I did have scratching problems (I worn out the f/ ring of
a Vivitar 70-200 S1). I told you already, if I remember well, that
threading the lateral big hole on the hexaplate would not be the solution,
for the reason you lament now. Maybe you could try with a custom screw,
thinner than the original one. Or you can keep your camera always in
"portrait" position, of course.
You have a better solution, trade your head for another kind of
Bogen/Manfrotto, but keep your tripod.
Last but not least, if the winder is not enough, you could trade it for a
motor drive :-)
