At the thought of M. Schloss' eyes rolling in horror at the whizing back and
forth
of a 300mm serial numbers I couldn't resist a little contribution.

300/4.5 01-74 01-82
The second date denotes his first sighting in Oly publications of the
300mm being given the MC treatment.
John Hermanson contributed thusly -
One code I saw in a 4 is "TND4" . Sometimes that D might look like a
"0". The D being the 4th letter of the alphabet stands for 1984, 4 is
April.
My particular example has a serial no. of 143673 and a white date
code on the other end of TNF4
That would make its date of crafting in April 1986, four years after
they started multicoating the 300mm f4.5
