You use film too, so should know better. ;-) The Akai 4000 DS was new about 1979-1984 so including the 80's and my 4000 DB with Dolby NR
is a tad better. This Tandbergs are wonderful and apply the bias "cross field" resulting in higher SN ratio. They claimed 7.5 in/sec
performance at 3 3/4. They sound as nice as Revox but are said to be finicky mechanically and electronically. I wish I had one but he glass heads in
the Akai are very robust. The belts required replacing and all the contacts cleaned. I had the Bias adjusted for LPR 35 tapes. Nothing
like watching metal reels turn while listening.
