Cable theft is always a problem in some parts of the country. But one of my favorite fiber cut outages I've had to deal with recently was when a meth lab in a Winnebago blew up and melted the cable. Or the ship that dragged an anchor during a storm outside of Dutch Harbor. Or the ice flow in the Arctic Ocean that broke the buried cable 110 feet below the surface. Or the avalanche. Or the ice berg. Or the moose that ate the fiber. Or the earthquake. Or the simultaneous forest fire AND flooding that washed out seven river crossings. Or the tanker truck that went off the haul road into the tundra and destroyed a buried cable. Or the mountain slide. Or the Bering Sea flood/fire event. Or the polar bear ripping a building apart. Or the train derailment. Or the volcano. It makes "backhoe fade" rather boring.
