I think this bee is a carpenter bee. Jim N. used to post many photos of
them, probably all of them better than this one, but never on a
coneflower. I've never seen carpenter bees in Iowa, but I haven't been
looking, really. I only got one shot at him:

I've been seeing bumblers so far this season but not our regular honey bees.
