Yes, it's amazingly compact, but not nearly as optically good as the huge older
600/6.5

I currently have two. Each of them is markedly better than my 600/6.5.
So, you could have a bum 500/8, or I could have a bum 600/6.5.
No way to tell, really. My 500/8 looks like it just came out of the box, new.

My 600/6.5 is, as I've said, a rescue case, not beat up, used, but not abused. They are notorious for vibration effects
on sharpness. My test shots were taken on a sturdy carbon fiber tripod on concrete, no wind, A7 using EFC, and I waited
a few seconds after focusing and setting aperture before using a remote, wireless release.
It's not like the 500/8 is bad. I find it hard to imagine any practical use where it isn't just fine. But my inquiring
mind wanted to know . . .
