The lens barrel deflection on my 12-100mm lens was visually observable,
not merely something made noticeable by the rattle. The rattle sound
itself was much louder than the one on my 12-40mm lens. I decided that
the looseness of the lens barrel on the 12-100mm lens was just too much
for a nominally brand new lens, and sent it to Olympus for repair. I'll
see what happens.
Powering up the camera (a suggestion from Wayne S) made no difference
with either the lens barrel movement or the rattle. This makes sense to
me because the in-lens IS moves a few lens elements in the middle of the
lens, not the lens barrel as a whole.
Wayne H has said his Lumix 12-60mm seems to rattle a little off-camera,
but not when mounted and powered up. I happen to have a Lumix 12-60mm
lens (the Panny 3.5-5.6 - I think we're talking about the same lens).
It behaves as Wayne described, except that the rattle is not coming from
the extending lens barrel. The lens barrel is rock solid. It is hard
to exactly localize the rattle location, but it seems to come from
inside the lens, around or a little behind the zoom ring. Mounted on an
E-M5 (i), the sound went away when the camera was powered up. I thought
that the Panasonic OIS doesn't function on this camera, so I am not sure
what mechanical function is engaged with camera power when neither
focusing or exposure setting is active.
