Lie means to rest or recline. Lay means to put or place. You do not lay on the bed or in the road unless you are a chicken. That seems to be the easiest for kids to understand. There are so many people who have never been taught that. Your and you're are almost as bad. "lay" is a transitive verb taking a direct object, such as “lay the table” etc . . . whereas “lie” is intransitive.
