I agree with C.H. - this is exactly what I did with two older HP Win 7 laptops.
Image current HD to new SSD then upgrade. That way, you have a fall-back in
case it doesn't work. It worked fine on both of mine.

You may also want to take this opportunity to upgrade the drive to SSD.
Image the Win7 system to a new SSD and do the upgrade. In case of
problem just put back the old HDD and resume business.
