Similar story here. The last computer I bought new was an HP laptop. It
lasted for less than three years and self-destructed. Prior to that, the only
computer I bought new was an Atari 800. I found a used Compaq portable at an
auction and used it for years. I still have it and the Atari.
This Dell Inspiron 6000 was given to me by a couple who had given up on
it. The coffee shop computer "expert" had installed Win7 over WinXP and
disabled a number of functions, including the ability to start in SAFE mode. I
managed to fix that with the BOOT scan function of AVAST.
You can find these on evilBay for less than $30, sometimes with RAM and
usually without a HD. And you can still get NOS batteries and RAM cards. They
are fairly heavy, but that's okay with me as they are reliable.
