Not quite as perfect as you suggest, as the "something bigger" varied quite a lot. With OMZ lenses, one can hardly call
the 18/3.5 a 49 mm filter lens, but it does fit into the 62, 72 and 100 mm filter sizes of others OMZ that are larger
than 55 mm.
Now it's different, the OEM's go out and get bids on lenses from subcontractors
and don't specify things like that.
Not quite as bad as you suggest, at least in µ4/3 Oly and Panny Land.
All the original primes and kit zooms are 37 or 46 mm. Oly even has honored those standards with their nice little
MCON-P02 achromatic C-U lens, with its clever design that fits both.
As super fast entered the game, the front elements just got too big for that, and one is
off in "something bigger" land.
