I have been at home Monday and Tuesday, recovering from a bout of severe gastroenteritis that prevented me from
travelling to Romania on Monday morning. I am well now, going back to the office this morning. In fact, yesterday
afternoon I had sufficient cabin fever to take a drive along the beach in order to play with my old Panasonic GF1
camera. I do not remember when I bought it, but it was launched in 2009. It has been sitting in storage for some
years, with the lenses in the possession of my daughter to whom I had also given a Panasonic GF2. But she recently
dropped that camera and it seems dead, so I have given her something else, and meanwhile I have the Panasonic lenses
back. So, yesterday I went out with the GF1 to see if it had potential as a cycling camera—it is small enough for that
and sometimes I may want more focal length options than what the Ricoh GRII provides.
If you like that, and want small and light for cycling, consider the GM1 or
GM5; both much smaller and lighter than the GF1:
Weight MP W x H x D
GF1 385 g 12 MP 119 x 71 x 36 mm (4.69 x 2.8 x 1.43")
GM1 204 g 16 MP 99 x 55 x 30 mm (3.88 x 2.16 x 1.2")
GM5 211 g 16 MP 99 x 60 x 36 mm (3.9 x 2.36 x 1.42")
Unfortunately, CameraSize doesn't have many older models. I've used an Oly E-PL7 as a stand-in for the GF1. It's 2mm
deeper, but narrower and shorter. In any case, you can get a sense of the smaller camera bodies and MUCH smaller lens.
Having also had Oly E-PL1, 2, 3, 6 & 7 & EP-M1 & 2, with the same sensors, I can say that 12 to 16 MP isn't such a big
deal, but the later sensor systems have better noise and dynamic range.
The GM1 has a pop-up flash, and the GM5 replaces that with a small, but usable EVF. Both came with a tiny, but good
quality 12-32 mm zoom. The 12-32 gets so short by being collapsible; turn the zoom ring past a detent @ 12mm and it gets
short. Panny also makes a tiny for focal range 35-100 collapsing lens for these cameras. <http://j.mp/2RZRlNd>
Weight Dia Length
14-42 165 g 56 mm 64 mm
12-32 70 g 61 mm 24 mm
