Hi Moose,
After I processed the photo, I sort of suspected I was kicking the
hornet's nest, but, I seemed to recall being told years ago that "no
one" should ever connect a camera directly to his computer. I always
have done that with my Olys, and its always worked fine. Same with my
old Fuji F-10, and my iPhone. On modern Fujis, I do plug the memory
cards into my built-in card reader.
I'm certainly not capable of assembling a computer. For needed computer
advice, I turn to my eldest son who has retired from government work
with space systems and defense contractors. But, his camera is his
iPhone, so he isn't much help with camera accessories.
I've read the smoke signals, and see that I am in the minority here.
Perhaps, when I replace my Windows 7 machine, I will consider finding
one of these "Swiss Army Knife" card readers.

Hi Charlie,
I expected this comment, but I have never seen a need to purchase
such a device. With USB connectors handy on the front of the computer,
I built my own computer (i.e. assembled the components), so it has
lots more connections on the front than yours, including a CF card
socket. Then there's the USB 3 card reader beside it that reads SD UHS
II cards at v. high speed. That also includes a CF reader. CF is very
much alive, big and fast, for the "Pro" Canons and Nikons.
I have cables for later Olys, iPhone, mini USB and micro USB hanging
all the time from the front panel, with a couple of USB 3 sockets
free. I don't think there's a flash card format used for cameras that
I can't read, including the SmartMedia cards of the first Oly P&S
cameras.
and cables in a convenient drawer, I saw no reason to remove cards
from the camera each time I wanted to dump the card.
I much prefer removing the cards.
Well Connected Moose
