Chris, I was catching up on the newspapers yesterday, using my
Ipad.In the Observer review there was a long article on Don mcCullin
referencing his upcoming exhibition in the Tate. It also gave a link to the
documentary you watched. It was hammering down with rain outside, My 67th
Birthday walk was washed out, so I did something I rarely do and turned on the
television in the morning.
The documentary was the best hour of television I have watched in a long time!!
A photographer at ease with his subjects, shooting in Black+White, and printing
his own work using chemicals!!He obviously has "demons" he would rather forget
from his time covering various conflicts but he came over as a thoughtful
individual. His book "Unreasonable Behaviour" is well worth a read, as are any
of his photographic books.

We watched a documentary on D McCullin last night, an hour-long piece on some
if his current and some old work, connecting the two sometimes. At one point,
in Scarborough a chap approached him about a photo that McCullin had taken of
him decades before playing football on the sand during lunch break. That photo
had become quite well known and the chap recognised McCullin.

The chap was the boy on the right.
During the programme he was using a Mamiya:

a Hasselblad and a digital EOS of some sort. The camera didn’t matter, his eye
for an image was so obvious . . .
