With the temperature already at 100F at 10 AM, I thought I'd take a look
at this. Doesn't seem to be much in the way of a "legitimate" site that
discusses it in any amount of detail, just a bunch of paranormal and conspiracy
blogs. Can you suggest one?
I have a book here, "The Bermuda Triangle Mystery" by Larry Kusche, that
lists and discusses all of the known disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
It's a useful reference in terms of the incidents, but the discussion of
"vortices" in the last chapter is a lot of nonsense.
I spent some time years ago looking into the subject of "methane
clathrates", methane ice formed by decaying organic matter under high pressure.
There's a crater in the North Sea called "Witch Hole" that has a century-old
fishing trawler sitting upright, undamaged. When the clathrate gets warm
enough, it sublimates into methane gas and rises to the surface as a large
bubble. The standing theory is that this trawler was sitting right over one of
these huge bubbles, and when the bubble got to the surface that lack of boyancy
caused the trawler to sink immediately and then got engulfed. That's a fairly
plausible explanation.
The Bermuda Triangle encompasses a large area known as the Sargasso Sea,
which is a gyre with a huge mat of seaweed floating at the surface. As the
seaweed dies, it sinks to the bottom, decomposes, and forms clathrates. After
a while, the clathrate sublimates and a large bubble of methane gas rises to
the surface. If a ship happens to be close nearby, it can get swallowed up,
and the bubble of methane rising in the atmosphere can be ignited by any number
of sources, such as a Martin flying boat with a lousy ignition.
