He uses PTAssembler which he constructed. I have read that Max Lyons independently
developed, using mathematical methods, the "recti-perspective" projection
(sounds like a technique used by gastroenterologists) which is essentially identical to
the Panini projection which was rediscovered about the same time. The backstory is
interesting--TK Sharpless was involved with developing Hugin in 2008 and co-rediscovered
an 18th century painters' technique for rendering wide views in a natural looking
perspective . It was named in honor of Gian Paolo Pannini, an 18th Century Roman painter
and professor of perspective. This projection seems to work very well for many pano
landscapes.

Fun and informative. Thanks for the info and link!
Moose is very very good at analyzing this panorama projection conundrum as he
has the rigor of a physicist to accurately isolate the problems with an image,
the eye of an artist ,and photographic processing chops to make it all happen.
Yowsa! Be careful, I blush easily. :-[
