Living in Switzerland I am used to seeing armed military (and their
tanks etc..) especially at the strain stations on a Sunday, I have much
the same sentiment as the other Europeans here, however that would
probably change quickly change if they became as gung-ho as the police
in America appear to be.

Same here. When I was last at Charles de Gaulle International there was a trio of
security personnel (2 men, 1 woman) with automatic weapons and wearing the distinctive

same when I was approached by a pair of security police near Gare du Nord who asked to
see my passport. It's a concession you make for being in an orderly society, and
protesting is a very bad idea.

I am often in Brussels and Paris, both places where one sees lots of
armed soldiers and police at the airports, outside the EU institutions
where I spend much of my time in Brussels, and in other sensitive
locations. Their presence does not alarm me; it reassures me.
