Well that seems to be the "Goldilocks" version right between Moosetified 
version and my original.  I don't know how you did the tone mapping--please 
clarify so I can try to replicate.  Have only heard that term 
used in HDR processing.  I did do a bit of LCE with USM at 50  pixel radius as 
usual.  Seems the consensus is I should have jazzed up the low contrast back 
lit situation more and I agree now.
