I generally eschew absolutes. :-)
Most of my purchases are local. After all, I live a couple of blocks from where Alice Waters grew up and just up the
hill from Chez Panise. What came much later to be called localvore in the US started right here.
But at least here, quite wonderful asparagus from Mexico and So. America is often available at reasonable prices, even
in the depths of winter. It's not possible to directly compare local spring asparagus to these winter imports, but I
sure don't taste a consistent difference.
There are also haricots verte from Mexico and Guatemala that are tastier and better textured than almost all local green
beans. They are also available in our winter; we just had my version sauteed with garlic this week. I did see some
locally grown French type green beans, so someone is paying attention, but the ones I've see so far aren't very appealing.
