Hmmm... According to an onlne search, there doesn't seem to be a Windows
equivalent to Little Snitch, although the description of Comodo firewall
certainly seems to fit the description.
I looked into the Windows Firewall and found that the security logging was
turned off, so I enabled it and then waited for some internet activity. Seems
that the laptop is connecting to and disconnecting from a "reverse DNS" site
called "popsite.net" (205.232.250.175), a reverse DNS for dial-up equipment,
which is looking at my webmail connection (207.69.189.109), which seems pretty
harmless. I'll have to use this tomorrow around noon when I see the background
activity taking place.
