It's a long time since I did real work with spreadsheets, Chris, though I still
remember the monster I developed for a certain classified phone directory
publisher in 1982. Annual ad sales budgets for every directory in the country -
they were utterly delighted with the transformation of the box in the corner
into a real tool they could use. Only problem was that the model was too big
for an Apple II, running VisiCalc, expanded to 96K memory =:-) Solution was to
extract all the directory titles to a separate file, run the formulae, save the
file, convert all calculated cells to 'results' (overwriting the formulae,
saving memory), reimport the titles, print and be done. Fortunately, although
the spreadsheet was oversize for the memory, it would fits onto a diskette
(143KB floppy). Phew.
Word clouds offline? I know there is a plugin for InDesign which I previewed a
while ago, though at the time I didn't have a compatible version of InDesign -
CS2 if I remember well, which must have been courtesy of Adobe's generosity
with the keys for that version. Now I am up to date, so if I can facilitate
anything...

Subject: [OM] Completely OT: Pivot Tables
I started using Swiftcalc in MS-DOS in about 1988, while based at MacDill AFB
in Florida; I started using Excel 2 or 3 years later, mainly on Winders/MS-DOS
and I have the latest version on my Macs, but it is only in the last 2 or 3
weeks that I’ve really tried to use Pivot Tables. I think that I’ve cracked
it, if only partly and using trial and error.
I have been running a survey at work, asking pilots their opinions on the
practical Spatial Disorientation training that I give them – as part of their
training in aviation medicine. It’s the first survey of this training where I
work and I’ve promised to publish it as a paper (once I learn how to do that
properly) to present at a conference in September, at Graz. Well, I was
determined to do the analysis myself, and to do it automatically, but it has
taken me many hours to get to grips with Pivot . . .
Does anyone on the list use any other system of analysis with Excel? And is
there a way to do word clouds without being connected to the Internet?
Chris
