Thanks for sharing your insights, Philippe. I am getting ready to
attempt to select a file structure that fits my picture taking habits,
i.e., Family, Little League, Airport, Skydiving, maybe even Pretty
Girls. :-)

Three steps
I often rename e.g. « 2016-Xmas-file nb » - LR can do that semi-automatically, just type
in the « prefix » and let the file number - there are other options but I like this one
best
I let LR create its folders the way it wants, by dates, and find it convenient since
it works fine - the itch is when you have several cameras not all set to the accurate
date and time - but this issue can also be addressed after the upload, automatically
(how do I know? I edited the photos from a dozen not-synchronized cameras when I last
got married … )
And most importantly, you can, should, must use keywords on import - e.g. "
holidays, Portugal, Sintra » . Thus, whatever the date, I can find all the photos I
shot In Portugal in a second, whatever the day they were shot, or restrict my quest to a
specific place, Sintra, etc.
In any case, the camera used will be recorded too, and it may sometimes be
useful to make a query this way too.
Hope this helps.

One of the tutorials I watched this afternoon made a point of explaining that a
three-day assignment, with files split into three folders by date, was a bad
thing. He always used a subject name instead of date. To each his own. :-D

Correction. The directory dates are not based on import date, but file
date. So if you shoot over a three day period of time, when you import
them, Lightroom will sort them into three directories. If you want, of
course.
This is a good thing, Martha. Unless, of course, you have a camera
that the clock resets itself to some crazy date like 6/1/2077. Don't
ask my how I know that.
