The US has bigger distances than most of those countries so flying will always
be a preferred option. But certainly for the Northeast corridor
Boston-NYC-Philly-Washington a HS train would make a lot of sense, as well as
other routes like LA-SF or Miami-Jacksonville. Both of the latter distances are
comparable with the Alicante-Madrid or Alicante-Barcelona distances, and I
certainly choose the train over flying when I have to go to those cities.
Especially Madrid where the train takes 2 hours which is faster than flying.
