Yes, Chris, my assumption was that they were some kind of counterweight like we are familiar with on propellers. This was the first time that I had seen them on rotors.

Until you found that, Jim, I should have guessed that they assisted in moving the rotors to
one pitch angle or another – against which the normal rotor mechanism had to act. On
a propellor you have weights to move the blades’ pitch to fully feathered (or is it
the other way around) when power is removed.

Wayne, I did some more digging, and found that they are vibration absorbers. I
found a number of technical references, but didn't really want to try to
understand the equations and the advanced math. The reference below was the
clearest of the bunch.

Interesting shot of the hub Jim. What is the purpose of the 2 "balls"

It was a nice day, so I took a short walk around the airport. Here are a
couple of observations.

This hangar door was raised as I passed by. I award this owner my "Neat
Hangar" award.

Helicopters provide lifesaving services every day, but few of us ever stop
to think about the complexities of the machines. The two jet engines are
hidden from view, but the complexities of the rotor hub are open to view and
are very impressive.
