Another issue with a shift lens is that the separation between left and
right lens positions is not sufficient for a good stereo effect. I checked
my 35mm PC-Nikkor which gives a separation of 20mm and my eyes are about
65mm apart.

You could use a shift bracket on a tripod, but the appeal of a stereo lens
is that both images are taken at the same time, which is critical for a
scene in which all of the elements are not stationary.
