Progress! Make sure that you have the focus peaking set "High".
And the final question is easy - the XPro1 does not have a split image
"rangefinder" at all.

Piers .......... setting the MCS wheel to M got the split image effect
for my 35/1.4 lens as well as the focusing distance scale along the
bottom of the EVF and the rear screen on my X-T1. Voila !
By setting the MCS wheel on the X Pro 1 to M I activate the manual focus
wheel on the lens itself. Depressing the rear wheel on the X Pro 1
brings up a magnified portion of the image in both the EVF and the rear
screen which in focusing but nowhere near as well as using a split image.
How do I effect the split image effect on the X Pro 1 ?
