The vote in North Britain should not be used as a "trigger" to demand a
second referendum on independence. I know many SNP supporters who voted
"brexit". Likewise a significant component of the "remain" vote was by
Scottish Conservative and Labour voters. It was not a groundswell of
exclusively "independence" proponents. I do submit that these referenda
should be decided with a much higher bar to change the status quo.

Having lived through two referendums here in Canada, I'm always
surprised that those against the status quo (Leave in this case,
'oui/yes' here in Canada) can get away with sweeping, optimistic
statements, without the media calling them to explain what their
objectives would be and how realistic those objectives were. Those on
the status quo side (Remain, the 'Non/No') are not afforded the same
luxury, as they are usually defending something that is less than
perfect. The Cornish reaction (panic after the fact, it seems) very
nicely shows what the Leave side was saying, without any explanation
or even justification - and the naivety of those that took those words
at face value.
While there's a good bit to dislike about how the EU functions and its
penchant for regulation, I expect time and events will dim the
rose-coloured glasses worn by many that voted to leave. Maybe Boris
should be named PM and allowed to deal with the mess that he and
others created. Poetic justice, perhaps.
Long term, I could see a scenario where Ireland is united (despite all
that happened in the past), Scotland is independent and, well, England
is just England. Wales, I don't know about. That scenario would be the
stuff of fiction, if it weren't sadly quite plausible.

Presumably the councillors didn’t vote to Leave, and didn’t expect
the country's to go that way.
But the councillors still have to make their budgets work, despite
the best efforts of their ever-so-slightly-clueless county inhabitants.
Presumably, again, those inhabitants believed the rubbish being
spouted by the Leave campaign about how much money went to the EU
without mentioning how much came back, particularly for rural areas
like Cornwall.
I suppose it’s good that the truth is out so early, but it doesn’t
make it any easier to stomach.
