If you decide to play with it I'd suggest you look for the service
manual. Compaq is now part of HP and I've always been impressed with
the amount of tech data available on HP's site.
I own an HP Pavilion desktop and have several maintenance and support
PDF files from HP's site. One is called "Troubleshooting and
Maintenance" and the other is the "Upgrading and Servicing Guide". They
clearly show the innards and how to remove and replace parts.
To get the correct manuals you'll likely need the specific model number
which is probably not displayed on the top but rather on some sticker on
the underside of the laptop. Alternatively, you can (on Win 7) click on
Start -> Control Panel -> System and read the specific model number there.
Good luck,

Thanks for the suggestion, Chuck. Its getting old enough for me to risk
poking around its innards. Of course today the flickering has gone away. It
must have read your post.

Just a wild guess but I suspect an intermittent electrical connection
between motherboard and display panel. I don't think that sleep mode is
related other than that the machine has to be on for a while before that
takes hold. I suspect that's giving it time to warm up and the thermal
expansion is fixing the intermittent connection.
If it were mine I'd open it up and pop the ribbon cable between
motherboard and display panel off and on several times. If the ribbon cable
has connectors at both ends then do the same on the other end. I'd also
wipe down any visible electrical contacts with some alcohol while the cable
is off. Then reassemble and see if that fixed it. If you feel
uncomfortable doing that someone at one of your local computer shops should
be able to do that in 15 minutes.
I have 2 laptops. An old Dell (WinXP upgraded to Win 7) and a much newer
Lenovo with Win 7. It just so happens that I downloaded the repair manual
from Dell for my machine (no cost) and it seems that what I'm suggesting is
fairly easy on that machine. You have to remove a plastic back panel (2
screws), pry up a plastic bezel above the keyboard working from one side to
the other and then remove the keyboard (2 screws) The only tricky point is
having to lift the keyboard off in order to get to the display cable. That
needs to be done with at least a little bit of care so you don't scatter
the keys all over your work table.

Greetings All,
I have a question regarding my laptop. It is a Compaq that I purchased
around the time Windows 7 was coming out. It came with Vista but had a
free
upgrade to 7 which I did immediately. The upgrade went flawlessly and the
laptop has given me no problems. In the last couple of days, after I boot
it up in the morning, the screen will blink in a random fashion. It
appears
the screen goes black for a small fraction of a second and has the
appearance of a short flicker (very annoying). If I turn it on and let it
sit unused until it goes into sleep mode, when I reawaken it, the flicker
has gone away until the next time the machine is rebooted. Does this
indicate impending doom? I keep my files backed up so if the worst happens
I'm covered. Any thoughts or suggestions? I have run viral/malware scans
and all are negative.
