Andrew, you have reminded me of one of my great regrets. When I was in
college, I could have been granted a fully legal ordination by the Universal
something or other church in California that required me to send them my
name, address and a few bucks. It was under ten dollars I do remember. I
seriously considered it, but alas, I realized that for the cost of that, I
could buy a couple of six packs of cheap beer. In many ways a bad choice.

I have a friend who was spending forever to get his PhD - he’s German and
kept fiddling with the thesis every time something relevant happened
anywhere. So I bought one just to tease him. From the University of Dublin.
Dublin California that is. Just down the road from Oakland. I looked it up
on Google Streetview once. It appears to be a storefront, between a
Presbyterian Church and a branch of Hooters. Perfect - trapped between the
Divine and the Secular.
Of course, they asked me what I’d like it awarded in. And as it was an
obvious fake (they provided a spurious academic record for one thing) I had
it awarded in Ethics. I don’t demand the honorific of Doctor very often,
only when I want to annoy or bother someone who is preening about the
letters after their name, - especially physicians who don’t have a
doctorate. And it’s handy for getting cheap car insurance in the UK (retired
doctor? Lowest rate!) A friend claims that he’s a minister of some southern
swamp religion - same routine. He hasn’t threatened to do marriages recently
but he used it as a joke when he shot weddings.
When I did my Masters I worked so hard and did so much that I decided I was
entitled - I’d done more than some science Phuds I’ve met.

Not all Doctors think they are god, just some PhD's, and neurosurgeons and

I knew a professor at Wichita State that got his PhD while employed there.
The next day he took all his unused checks (this before the days of cards
everywhere) and DEMANDED that they be reprinted to read Dr. Joe Blow. And
his degree is in playing the 'cello. A find skill, one that is important,
but not one that brings on thoughts of"his playing is Godlike!"

I dealt with surgeons, cardiologists and radiologists at my previous job.
Not a problem....

Thanks, everyone. Yes, it's a good job with good people, and nice room

The commute will be close to an hour, instead of the ten minutes I used
to
have, but that's life.
I just read an article about how Illinois universities are about to go
bankrupt because the new governor is an idiot, but fortunately (for me)
those are state universities while U of C is a private institution. I
panicked there for a minute when the one was saying they couldn't meet
payroll in March if things didn't get better....

Yep. After 8 months of wondering what the hell was wrong with me, I
am
once again a productive member of society.
Yay, me!!!
