My father's family lived in northern Mississippi, and my
gr-gr-grandfather served in the Confederate army.
My mother's family lived in southern Kentucky, a border state, and many
were Baptist ministers. My gr-gr-grandfather preached against the
Confederacy from his pulpit, and was eventually kidnapped by a band of
guerrillas from northern Tennessee, and carried away and killed. His
son drove a wagon to the site and took his body home.
I learned many of these details by several years of genealogy searching.
You never know what you will find when you go down that path.

My own ancestors (a father and two sons) were very active in the

I admit to being tone deaf to the Civil War/War between the States. As
far as I know, and that's quite a lot, none of my forebears or their
relatives were involved. Any who may have been briefly in the US at the
time were on their way directly from Europe to the wilderness of the
Utah Territory. I then grew up almost 100 years later on an edge of the
continent where there are simply communal no memories or emotional
affect that I was aware of.
