We recently upped our game here at Chateau Whitmire after some frustrations
with our old Airport router and Time-Warner's bait-and-switch tactics.

First, we installed (that is, _I_ installed) a new Airport Extreme tower.
It has remarkable reach in that my photo computer, upstairs at the south
end of the house, and Joan's iMac, downstairs at the north end of the
house, both clock roughly the same on various internet speed sites,
including Time-Warner's. This was not the case with the old Airport router,
which was the square flat design.

Second, I paid a visit to Time-Warner's brick-and-mortar facility in
Rockland to complain about the slowdown of our internet since we signed up
for a new deal back in January. At the time we signed up, I thought they
were going to increase our internet speed, but instead, they decreased it.
Before this most recent visit, we were running at 16 mbps download, and 1.6
mbps download (Standard Internet). Before the package change, we'd been
hovering around 21 down and 2 up (Turbo Internet). The woman at the office
(an actual human being!) apologized for the downgrade and added Extreme
Internet to our package at no increase in cost. Now we're smoking at 36
mbps down and 6 mpbs up. My brothers and sisters, that be some fast
internet!

The disadvantage of going to the Time-Warner office is that it's about 30
miles away. The advantage is that on these glorious summer days I ride my
motorcycle, so I don't care how far it is, though on the first visit the
nice lady gave me a new modem that would handle the higher speeds and it
just barely fit under my bike jacket. (No saddlebags.) I discovered that
the actual humans at the brick-and-mortar office can do anything the
phone-bank folks can do, and sometimes more, so in the future it'll be a
visit to TW, not a phone call. I had to return the old modem, which was
smaller and fit in my over-the-shoulder X-100 Kata bag, occasioning another
fabulous ride on the Great Pumpkin.
